What's the Average Hourly Rate for eCommerce Developers in 2026?
So I've been going back and forth getting quotes for some fixes on my store this month. Figured I'd drop actual numbers here because half the threads I found were way too vague to be useful.
Cheap end / offshore devs
$20/hour seems to be the floor right now. Works fine for small stuff - a broken button, a minor feature tweak, whatever. Wouldn't trust it for anything that requires deep thinking though.
Mid-range
$30 to $60/hour is where most "actually knows what they're doing" developers land, especially if they've got real Shopify or Magento or WooCommerce experience. Honestly this is probably where most people should be looking.
The expensive stuff
Past $100/hour and you're paying for specialists - niche platform knowledge, custom checkout work, complicated integrations. Makes sense for bigger projects but overkill if you just need a quick fix.
Few things that actually move the number around: platform (Magento guys usually cost more than Shopify folks), where the developer's based, and just... experience honestly. I've seen a $20/hr guy take three times as long as someone charging way more. So cheap on paper isn't always cheap in reality. Learned that one myself.
If you're not ready to commit to something big and just need hourly help, that's basically the route I went - ended up looking to hire ecommerce developer talent hourly instead of locking into a bigger contract. Pricing was pretty clear, which made comparing stuff way easier than I expected.
Anyone else actually paying these rates right now, or am I getting quoted wrong?
