How Much Did Your Online Store Cost to Build?
I asked a few friends who run stores what they spent, and I got a bunch of totally different answers. One guy did it on a template in a weekend. Another is still paying for custom work a year later. Same thing on paper, very different bills.
So what about you? If you launched recently, did you stay near your original budget, or did it quietly double on you?
Where Does the Money Actually Go?
Mostly the same few places, from what I can tell:
- Platform. Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce. They don’t cost the same to set up, and customising them differs a lot.
- Design. Themes are cheap. A custom layout, not so much.
- Payments. You’d think it’s a checkbox. It isn’t, especially with several payment options.
- Integrations. CRM, ERP, inventory, shipping. This is where I see budgets blow up.
- Extras. Filters, recommendations, customer accounts, and order automation. Everyone is more work.
Is Custom Worth Paying For?
Depends. Small catalogue and simple needs? A theme is probably enough, and paying more is just wasting money. But stores that grow tend to hit a wall. At that point, eCommerce web development services can be worth a look, because someone plans the structure, picks the tech, and builds around how you really sell. Yes, it costs more upfront. But adding stuff later is a lot less painful.
How Should You Budget?
Make two lists: what the store needs on day one, and what would be nice. Then don’t spend it all before launch. Fixes and updates always show up afterwards, and they aren’t free.
What Did Yours Cost?
- Rough total?
- Template or custom?
- Which feature took the biggest bite?
- What would you skip next time?
Still planning? Tell us what matters most to you: low cost, custom features, or room to grow. Ranges are fine; nobody needs exact numbers.
